A diner classic! Juicy beef patties layered with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese, all tucked between buttery rye bread and grilled until golden brown.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 onion, sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices rye bread
- 2 tbsp butter
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- Form the Patties
Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape into 2–4 thin patties (depending on bread size). - Cook the Onions
In a skillet, cook sliced onions over medium heat until soft and golden, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside. - Cook the Patties
In the same skillet, cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. - Assemble the Melts
Place Swiss cheese, a beef patty, and caramelized onions between two slices of rye bread. - Grill the Sandwich
Spread butter on the outsides of the bread. Grill in a skillet over medium heat until the bread is crispy and golden, and the cheese is melted. - Serve Hot
Slice in half and enjoy immediately!
