A diner classic! Juicy beef patties layered with caramelized onions and melted Swiss cheese, all tucked between buttery rye bread and grilled until golden brown.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices rye bread
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Form the Patties
    Season ground beef with salt and pepper. Shape into 2–4 thin patties (depending on bread size).
  2. Cook the Onions
    In a skillet, cook sliced onions over medium heat until soft and golden, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  3. Cook the Patties
    In the same skillet, cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  4. Assemble the Melts
    Place Swiss cheese, a beef patty, and caramelized onions between two slices of rye bread.
  5. Grill the Sandwich
    Spread butter on the outsides of the bread. Grill in a skillet over medium heat until the bread is crispy and golden, and the cheese is melted.
  6. Serve Hot
    Slice in half and enjoy immediately!
