A cozy, hearty Amish-inspired comfort food dish. Juicy hamburger steaks are baked in a rich mushroom gravy until tender, perfect for serving over potatoes or rice.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
2 cups beef broth
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Salt and pepper, to taste
Optional: cooked potatoes or rice for serving
Directions
1. Prepare the Patties
In a bowl, combine ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. Shape into 4–6 patties.
2. Brown the Patties
In a skillet, sear patties over medium heat for 2–3 minutes per side until nicely browned (they don’t need to cook through yet).
3. Make the Gravy
In a separate bowl, whisk together beef broth and cream of mushroom soup until smooth.
4. Bake
Place browned patties in a greased baking dish. Pour the gravy mixture over the top. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35–40 minutes, until patties are cooked through and gravy is bubbling.
5. Serve
Spoon patties and gravy over hot potatoes or rice for a complete meal.
